Looking along Cowpen Road towards ASDA. The building at the end in the centre of the photo is Premier Meats, the Kitty Brewster. The shop on the right is still open today as a sandwich shop.

One of the buildings in the centre is The Percy Arms which is not to be confused with the Percy in Brierly Road.

If only Cowpen Road was a quiet as this today.

The Queens Head Hotel in Kinds Street. This pub became part of The Coronation Club when it closed and survived until the Coronation itself closed. It's now used as a restaurant and take away.

The Globe in Waterloo Road survived until around 1982 when it followed numerous other town centre pubs and was converted for retail use. In the early part of the last century, families lived in the rooms above. An early for of a HMO perhaps.

The Ridley Arms in Northumberland Street was a pretty grand old stone building. It closed when it's licence was transferred to the newly built Seahorse in Plessey Road. It was demolished soon after and replaced by housing.

aa12.jpg

The Sidney Arms on Cowpen Road was another old building with a lot of history. Rumoured to have been used as a place of worship at a time when Catholics were being persecuted.

aa28.jpg

The Gladstone Arms in Burt Street. As mentioned earlier was one of many pubs in the streets leading to the river. Most of the streets were demolished when the shipyard was extended to cover more of the river front.

The Seven Stars was in North Blyth and a familiar sight to anyone parked on the quayside.

The Fox and Hounds on Kings Street. Also known as The Wagon Way and The Fox in it's life time.
