When coal was gold Blyth was one of the most important ports in the country.

The Port Of Blyth is still a major employer in the town but in years gone by it was one of the biggest exporters of coal in the UK. It's ship yard built the first aircraft carrier. And Royal Navy warships carried the towns name.
