Target date revealed for the return of rail services to Blyth.

The man leading the project to return passenger rail services to South East Northumberland has revealed that August 2024 as the date it's hoped that the first passengers will be carried. Speaking at a meeting of local councils programme director Neil Blackburn said he is confident the deadline will be met

He said: “We’re targeting August next year for the first passengers to be carried. That relies on a number of things coming together.

“The stations will be the final pieces of the jigsaw and we’re working to August right now. Once we get going it’s pretty hard to stop. We’re on with it.”

The line which will link Ashington, Bedlington, Blyth, Seaton Delaval and Northumberland Park to Newcastle Central station had been due to open in summer 2023 but that date has now been pushed back.
It was also revealed that the line could be extended to stations beyond Newcastle.
Mr Blackburn said " We could go onto the Metro Centre or another destination. We need to walk before we run , but I think there is potential for Northern to extend it beyond".

The government has been keen to point out the benefits the new line will bring to the area, including halving journey times between Northumberland's largest town and Newcastle city centre.

It has also been revealed that students could get access to reduced price tickets in plans being drawn up for ticketing .
