Cowpen Hall

bm202.jpg

Situated just off Cowpen Road the hall was built around 1720 by Peter Potts a skinner and glove manufacturer from Newcastle.  A house is shown on an earlier map but little is known about that building.

The hall had passed to the Sidney family by 1730 who owned it until the early 20th century.

The last recorded owner was a Mrs Muriel Petrie in 1945.

For some inexplicable reason, the building was converted to a working men's club in 1951 and demolished in 1958 and replaced with a large but pretty unremarkable new working men's club.

Cowpen and Bebside Social Club as it was known was itself demolished 1n 1999.

The site is now occupied by McDonalds.

Cowpen and Bebside or just Cowpen Club as it was known shortly before demolition.

From stately home to a McDonalds.
